Devastating Monsoon Rains in Sri Lanka: 7 Lives Lost in Floods and Landslides

June 2, 2024: At least seven people have lost their lives in Sri Lanka due to flooding and landslides triggered by monsoon rains, as reported by the country's Disaster Management Centre (DMC). The tragedy struck Sitawaka, just outside the capital city of Colombo, where three members of a single-family perished when their house was inundated. As a result of the calamity, electricity supplies have been disrupted in multiple areas, prompting authorities to order the closure of schools on Monday. Additionally, landslide warnings have been issued in nine districts, underscoring the severity of the situation.

The rains have affected 20 of the country's 25 districts, prompting the mobilization of the military to provide relief to affected individuals and communities.

To aid in relief efforts, the Air Force has deployed three helicopters and rescue teams. Ten Navy teams have also been dispatched, and an additional 116 teams are prepared for deployment. The army has also stepped in to provide food to displaced people.

The devastating impact of the monsoon rains in Sri Lanka poignantly reminds us of the importance of preparedness and swift action in the face of natural disasters. As the nation grapples with this crisis, it is crucial for citizens to remain vigilant and heed official warnings and guidance to ensure their safety and well-being.
