According to the USGS, the earthquake in Nevada today occurred as the result of strike slip faulting in the shallow crust of the North America plate.

This earthquake occurred within the Walker Lane, an active zone of seismicity roughly aligned with the California-Nevada border.

Minor damages with broken windows have been reported in Tonopah. The earthquake also caused damage to US 95 in Esmeralda County. The sections of highway U.S. 95 were closed in Esmeralda and Mineral Counties because of damage.

According to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, the current earthquake is the largest since 1954. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck central Nevada on December 16, 1954. The largest earthquake in Nevada's history was of magnitude 7.6 which occurred on October 3, 1915 with epicenter in Pleasant Valley, south of Winnemucca.

In Modesto, California, my experience wasn't so much that I felt much shaking, but I heard my house creaking—here some, then there some—pause—then over there some more. I thought it might be a remote earthquake, but because I didn't feel much shaking I also wondered if it weren't a very strong blast of wind. But it didn't seem to be very windy otherwise.

USGS has revised the magnitude again. The current report claims magnitude 6.5 earthquake with epicenter located 56 km W of Tonopah, Nevada. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 2.8 km.

According to the USGS, there is a 6 % chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5.8 within one week. However, the chance of an earthquake of magnitude 3 or higher is 93 %.

At least 17 aftershocks have been recorded within an hour.

USGS has again revised the magnitude and updated as it reported first time. USGS reports magnitude 6.4 earthquake 56km W of Tonopah, Nevada. Now, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are reporting the same magnitude.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory confirms magnitude 6.4 earthquake with epicenter located 20.6 miles SE of Mina. The earthquake occurred at 4 km depth.

Update 11:38 UTC

At least seven aftershocks have been felt in Nevada within 30 miniutes. The strongest aftershock was of magnitude 5.4.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has revised the magnitude and downgraded it to 6.2 with epicenter 60 km W of Tonopah, Nevada.

Three aftershocks have been widely felt across Nevada. An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 was recorded after five minutes of the major earthquake. It was followed by magnitude 4.0 light earthquake at 04:12 am local time. Another moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 was recorded five minutes later.

Most of the earthquake felt reports have been received from Carson, City, Bishop, Dayton and Hawthorne area of the United States.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicenter was located 57km WNW of Tonopah, Nevada.

  4. My sister lives in Dayton; she said the whole house shook. I live in Reno; to me it felt like a 4 or something mild.
