The earthquake occurred at 56.7 km depth.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports that tsunami waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters (0.98 feet) above the tide level for the coasts of Hawaiʻi, Japan, Johnston Atoll, Midway Island, Northern Marianas, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Russia and Wake Island.

A tsunami watch has been issued for the state of Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
According to the the PTWC, if tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave on March 24, 2020 at 10:39 p.m. H.S.T.

According to the USGS, the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc extends approximately 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, until terminating at its intersection with the Aleutian arc south of the Commander Islands, Russia.

According to the USGS, the earthquake's epicenter was located 218 km far from Severo-Kuril’sk, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia.
