Storm Desmond brings widespread flooding in Ireland; Severe flood situation remains in Shannon catchment area

Severe flooding caused by storm Desmond has affected the west coast of Ireland and the Midlands.

Status Yellow rainfall warning has been issued for Cork, Kerry and Waterford valid from Monday 14 December 2015 to Tuesday 15 December 2015.

Meanwhile, flooding still continues in parts of the River Shannon catchment area. The National Emergency Coordination Group has described it as a "severe flood situation".

The water levels have risen by 2.5cm in the area around Athlone, but the rise is half what it was yesterday, Jim Casey of the Office of Public Works said to National Emergency Coordination Group, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), Ireland's National Public Service Broadcaster mentioned.

Met Éireann had issue the first status red weather warning since coding of weather warnings began. Emergency services, local authorities and civil defence crews were working in difficult sitution to prevent flood damage in many areas of the country.
