Hildale, Utah flash flood kills 16, leaves four missing

Flash flood in Hildale, Utah has claimed lives of at least sixteen people and left four others missing.

According to Reuters, flash floods near Utah's border with Arizona killed 12 people and left one missing. Similarly, four people died and three went missing in Zion National Park to the north, after going to explore canyons.

Two vehicles carrying women and children from a park were washed away by a flash flood near the Utah-Arizona border. At least six children and three women died after trying to drive over a gully in Hildale, Utah officials in the city of Hildale and with Washington County Emergency Services said.

According to The New York Times, the victims are the members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or F.L.D.S., a polygamous sect that split from the Mormon Church in the early 20th century.

Emergency crews and about 500 volunteers have been searching for survivors and clearing debris from Tuesday.
