A severe weather system in Gilgit Baltistan and Chitral could lead to Glacial Lake Outbrust Flood (GLOF) in Pakistan, Government said.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an advisory on 24 July 2015 predicting Glacial Lake Outbrust Flood (GLOF), particularly in PMD's pilot GLOF sites Bagrot, Bindogol and Golain valleys.

PMD has predicted the severe weather system likely to persist during next 4-5 days in Gilgit Baltistan and Chitral.

All concerned should be cautioned / forewarned to take all necessary precautionary measures to avoid any loss of lives and damage to public as well as private property, the advisory has mentioned.

Bindo Gol is a remote valley located 65 kilometers northwest of Chitral town in Northern Pakistan. According to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bindo Gol is vulnerable to a number of natural disasters including GLOF, landslides and avalanches and claims that non-governmental organizations and other institutions are not well established within the valley to respond effectively to such disasters.

UNDP is supporting efforts to reduce the risk of flash floods from glacial lake outbursts in high risk areas of Gilgit and Chitral districts.

A flood emergency has been declared in Chitral and the federal and provincial government as well as NGO’s have been appealed for their cooperation.
