Freak tornado rips through Ciudad Acuna, Mexico killing 13

At least 13 people have died after a freak tornado ripped through the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Acuna on Monday morning.

Fatalities include 10 adults and three children, Coahuila Governor Ruben Moreira said on a visit to the disaster area.

Around 750 homes in the city across the Rio Grande from Del Rio, Texas have been damaged, Reuters reported.

"It was the first tornado to hit Acuna since the city's foundation, more than 100 years ago," BBC has reported quoting Ciudad Acuna Mayor Evaristo Lenin Perez .

According to the Home Ministry, tornado has injured at least 290 people, with 44 remain hospitalized.

Preliminary findings have found the tornado to be between a grade EF2 and EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale and was the strongest for at least 15 years in Mexico.

At least twelve people have been missing after flash floods struck the Blanco river in central Texas on Sunday. At least three people have died due to the flooding in Texas since Saturday.
