Giant sinkhole in New Jersey swallows car

A giant sinkhole in Jersey's South Amboy has swallowed a car destroying part of a street. The sinkhole in New Jersey is at least 20 feet deep and 15 feet across.

Three nearby homes along Gordon Street in South Amboy had to be evacuated, NJ.Com quoted Chief Michael Geraltowski of the South Amboy Fire Department as saying.

Gordon Street will be closed until further notice in the area east of Pine Avenue as crews make emergency repairs, CBS News reported quoting South Amboy police.

No one was reported injured by the sinkhole in New Jersey which is believed to have occurred because of a break in a water main. 

A sinkhole is essentially any hole in the ground created by erosion and the drainage of water which could be as the result of natural processes or even triggered by human activities.

What to do after a sinkhole?

  • Immediately contact homeowners insurance company if your home (property) is under threat.
  • Get in contact with Office of Emergency Management for your area if damage is huge.
