Cyclone Marcia smashes parts of Yeppoon and Rockhampton in Australia

Tropical Cyclone Marcia has smashed parts of Yeppoon and Rockhampton as it moves down the Queensland coast in Australia.

"Around 100 properties in Yeppoon and Rockhampton deemed uninhabitable after rapid damage assessments and 1500 homes suffered structural damage", The Brisbane Times has mentioned in its live blog.

Around 48,000 homes have been left without power in Yeppoon, Rockhampton and Bundaburg as the storm moved south.

National disaster recovery funding has been activated for the Rockhampton, Livingstone and Banana Shire Regional Council areas.

Rockhampton Airport has been closed to the public but is being used for defence arrivals and departures. 

In Gympie, floodwaters peaked at 16.6m early Sunday afternoon.

The State Emergency Service has received 452 requests for help over the past 24 hours, mostly from Brisbane, central Queensland and south-east Queensland.

Cyclone Marcia which formed off Queensland's coast of Australia was expected to intensify to make landfall as a category two cyclone earlier.
