Torrential rains and flashfloods in Sri Lanka have marooned more than 35,000 people, disaster management officials said on Sunday.
According to the National Disaster Management Centre, around 30,000 people are from the worst hit Batticaloa district in eastern Sri Lanka. Nearly 14,000 people are having shelter in 107 welfare camps.
Thundershowers will occur at several places in the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Galle via Trincomalee and Pottuvil, The official governmental news portal of Sri Lanka has written.

According to the disaster management centre, severe weather and flooding have affected the people in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Mannar and Trincomalee.
The government has instructed the relevant authorities to take immediate responses to ensure disaster relief to families affected by bad weather. Flood is one of the worst natural disaster to hit the world in 2014.
