India launches SMS-based weather alert system

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Christmas day launched a SMS-based weather alert system for general public for disseminating of natural disaster information.

IMD will send weather alert SMS to individuals who register themselves at the weather forecaster's official website - www.imd.gov.in. According to NDTV, the system will provide alerts on cyclones, tsunami and other weather-related natural calamities.

Apart from giving information about the natural disasters, this SMS-based weather alert system will also suggest ways on what actions need to be taken, both by the government authorities and people, Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences said in the inauguration ceremony.

Emergency weather alert system was launched on Thursday as an observance to the good governance day to mark the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Times of India reported.

India is one of the top ten riskiest countries in the world for natural disasters, according to the report released by Swiss Re in March 2014. Kolkata city of India is also the fifth highest risk for tsunami and the residents are on alert for cyclones.
