What is a tornado?
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that extends from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground. Most tornadoes form from thunderstorms. Tornadoes often develop from a class of thunderstorms known as supercells. Tornado strength is classified by the Fujita scale, which uses a scale of one to six to denote tornado wind speed.
What are the characteristics of a tornado?
Tornadoes are generally funnel shape, or in a slender rope-like form. Tornadoes normally rotate cyclonically. In the southern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a clockwise direction and in the northern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a counterclockwise direction.
Where do tornadoes occur the most in the world?
Tornadoes occur most frequently in United States, Canada, Argentina and Bangladesh. Tornadoes have been recorded in every continent except Antarctica. Tornadoes occur in many parts of the world, including Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America
