Very severe cyclonic storm ‘NILOFAR’ targets Kutch, Gujarat

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for north Gujarat coast of India following a very severe cyclonic storm 'Nilofar'.

Cyclone Nilofar was located about 1120 km south west of Naliya (Gujarat), 1170 km south - southwest of Karachi (Pakistan) and 840 km east -southeast of Salalah (Oman) at 02:30 IST, 28th October 2014.

In its 'very severe cyclonic storm ‘NILOFAR’ over west central Arabian sea' bulletin, IMD said, "Nilofar would move north-north west wards during next 18hrs and then recurve northeastwards and cross north Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast around Naliya by 31st October morning."

Indian Meteorological Department expects heavy to very heavy rainfall along the coastal district of Saurashtra and Kutch from 30th October morning. The fishing operations have been totally suspended along and off Gujarat coast.

Meanwhile, rumors about cyclone Nilofar soon hitting Goa have created panic in social medias like facebook and twitter. "Nobody is referring to our website. IMD is the nodal agency for this. Cyclone Nilofar is not going to affect Goa," Indian meteorological department director V K Mini said The Times of India.

Earlier cyclonic storm 'Hudhud' hit  India's eastern coast. The new cyclonic storm, formed in Arabian Sea, will, however, not be as intense as Hudhud.

The cyclone has been named Nilofar by Pakistan.
