Typhoon Halong in Japan claims 10 lives

According to The Japan Times, Tyhoon Halong has claimed lives of at least 10 people. Typhoon Halong has now weakened into an extra-tropical depression in the Sea of Japan.

Japan has issued highest alert as typhoon heads for southwest Japan, Japan Today has written. The alert has been issued for the Mie Prefecture, some 300 kilometers west of Tokyo.
At least 473 flights have been cancelled due to the typhoon. The local authorities in Tokushima in Shikoku has issued an evacuation advisory to some 44,100 residents.

Typhoon Halong with packing winds of up to 198 kilometres (123 miles) per hour is expected to make landfall in southwestern Japan by Saturday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. At 01:00 UTC, Typhoon Halong was located approximately 216 nm southeast of Sasebo, Japan. It is expected to affect Kyushu, Shikoku and western Honshu on Saturday evening.

The storm brought heavy rains and wind to islands east of the Okinawa chain on Friday.

Heavy rainfall caused by Typhoon Halong claimed lives of at least two people in Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management said. Typhoon Halong left the Philippine area of responsibility on August 7. Typhoon Halong was known as Typhoon Jose in Philippines.

Typhoon Halong is expected to hit Russia's Maritime Territory on Monday. Typhoon Halong is the twelfth named storm and the fifth typhoon of the annual typhoon season.
