Pacific hurricane Marie kills 1, produces largest swell in southern California

Hurricane Marie is the sixth-most intense Pacific hurricane on record which became the first Category 5 hurricane in the Northeast Pacific since Hurricane Cella in 2010.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded Marie to Category 5 hurricane on August 24.

One person has died while surfing on a beach in Malibu, The Telegraph reported.
Swells produced by Hurricane Marie in the Pacific are largest seen in southern California since 1997. Waves as high as 20ft have hit southern California’s beaches, The Telegraph added.

According to El Universal, a green alert was issued for Guerrero and Oaxaca and blue alert was issued for Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan and Chiaps in Mexico due to threat of hurricane Marie.

In California, high surf advisories were issued for the Greater Los Angeles Area. Swells of 10 to 15 ft (3.0 to 4.6 m) were anticipated with the risk of coastal flooding and structural damage, Iowa Environmental Mesonet National Weather Service mentioned.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, the homes at oceanfront in Seal Beach were inundated by a surge of rising seawater due to Hurricane Marie spinning off Mexico's Pacific coast.

At 09:00 UTC, Marie was located 1,320 km WSW of Punta eugenia, Mexico. The swells generated by Marie are expected to gradually subside in the extreme southern Gulf of California today. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect and Marie is likely to become Post-tropical later today.
