Manado, Indonesia Flooding: Calamities in Sulawesi claim 16 lives

Landslides and flooding in Sulwesi, Indonesia have claimed lives of at least 16 people and displaced around 4,000 people, local disaster management agency said.

Fatalities occurred due to floodwaters in Manado and by landslides in Tomohon city and Minahasa district of Indonesia.

Around 2,761 people affected by floods in Jakarta have been taking refuge in 20 temporary shelters, the Jakarta Post reported quoting the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

The Police, Armies, National Search and Rescue Agency and the Indonesian Red Cross are engaged in rescue operations.

Recent flooding and landslides have impacted North Sulawesi, North Minahasa, Tomohon, Minahasa, South Minahasa and Sangihe Islands of Indonesia.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered to take immediate disaster mitigation measures in the natural calamities areas. Meteorological agency is also being urged to provide accurate weather and climate forecast for the next four months.
