Central California earthquake today: 4.3 quake near Weldon, east of Bakersfield

M 4.3 light earthquake shakes Central California today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of Central California earthquake today was located 19 km S of Weldon. It was 1.9 miles deep.

According to the USGS Pager Map, weak shaking will have been felt by the people of Weldon, Lake Isabella, Tehachapi, Wofford Heights, Kernville, Bodfish, Bakersfield and Lancaster.

The largest recorded earthquake in California was the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake of magnitude 8.0. That earthquake ruptured the San Andreas Fault from Parkfield to Wrightwood. Note that the town of Parkfield is in central California which produces an earthquake of about magnitude 6 + every 20–30 years.

The 2003 Working Group for California Earthquake Probability assigned a 21% probability that the San Andreas Fault would produce a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from Central California earthquake today.
