Moderate earthquake shakes Christchurch, New Zealand

GeoNet has assigned maximum shaking intensity of 6 (strong). Moderate to light shaking has been reported in Lincoln.

M 4.2 moderate shallow earthquake shakes Christchurch, New Zealand today, the GeoNet reported.

According to the GeoNet, the quake's epicenter was located 25 km south-west of Christchurch. It was 7 km deep.

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand.

New Zealand lies along the boundary between the Australian and Pacific Plates. The February 2011 Christchurch earthquake claimed 185 lives. It is the second-deadliest natural disaster recorded in New Zealand.

No immediate damage or injury has been reported from earthquake in Christchurch today.
