Flood plus 500 lightning strikes in New Zealand

MetService New Zealand has recorded more than 500 lightning strikes in Central New Zealand last night including about 100 in Wellington alone.

Photo aside by Stuff.CO.NZ shows a large pine split by a lightning strike at the Shandon Golf Club, Petone.

Emergency services and Wellington City Council were flooded with calls after severe weather, Stuff.CO.NZ reports.

Heavy rainfall has also caused flash flooding in Wellington, Christchurch and Marlborough.

Flood damaged cars in Wellington. Flood damaged more than 20 cars after a basement carpark flooded in Newtown.

Air New Zealand has suspended all flights out of Wellington Airport.
