Landslide in Tibet traps 83 in gold mining area

At least 83 miners are reported to be trapped in a landslide in Tibet. Landslide disaster occurred in the gold mining area of Maizhokunggar county of Lhasa.

Update 2013/03/31; 14:00 UTC
Eleven bodies have been recovered till now from the landslide area. Still 72 miners remain missing.

Update 10:55 UTC

-Rescuers have found the first body at17:35 local time,  almost after 36 hours. Condition still unknown.
-Rescue operations are difficult to perform due to snowing in the area. Till now more than 300,000 cubic meters of debris have been removed.

Update 06:05 UTC
The Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) has send special emergency response team to the mine landslide area in Tibet. The members in the emergency team are from the MCA, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Land and Resources. They will further guide rescue efforts. Note that more than a thousnads rescue officials are already working from last 30 hours on the landslide area. But have not yet found survivors or bodies.

No more news has been flashed. Rescue work is still going on. It is about 28 hours after the massive landslide in Tibet but rescuers have not yet found survivors or bodies.

Update 23:45 UTC
-Around 1,000 police, firefighters and doctors are working in the rescue operation following the landslide in Tibet.
-Landslide has collapsed area of 4 sq km (1.5 sq miles). Landslide occurred an altitude of 4,600 meters.
-Disaster area is within the Jiama Copper Gold Polymetallic Mine located 68 kilometers far from Lhasa.
-In another recent disaster in Jilin, a gas explosion at a coal mine has killed 28 miners.

At least 83 miners are reported to be trapped in a landslide in Tibet. Landslide disaster occurred in the gold mining area of Maizhokunggar county of Lhasa.

Following Xinhua News Agency, the workers were from a subsidiary of the China National Gold Group Corporation.

Landslide in gold mining area in Tibet occurred early in the morning but news was flashed only in the evening.

Emergency disaster relief programme has now started as rescue teams have also arrived the landslide area.

China mine disasters are the deadliest in the world. Earthquake caused the landslides in Tibet in 1950 which destroyed 70 villages. Natural disaster claimed 30,000 lives.
