Tokyo_Snowstorm_2013
  • Snowstorm in Shiojiri city, Japan
    -Heavy snow in Shiojiri city (Kanto-Koshin region) of Japan killed one and injured 900 others.
    -Storm caused eight centimeters of snow in nine hours in Tokyo. It is the heaviest snowfall in Tokyo since January 2006.
    -Around 13 centimeters of snow was accumulated in Yokohama while 30 centimeters was seen in the mountainous areas around Tokyo.
    -All domestic flights of Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines were cancelled.
    -The 2008 Chinese winter storms, China's worst winter weather in half a century, killed at least 129 people. Winter storm was mainly related to abnormal atmospheric circulation and La Niña (Photo: Snow fall in the Ginza shopping district in Tokyo; Getty image).

  • Winter storm Helen
    -Winter storm Helen is expected to bring huge icing in southern Ark., northern La., northwest Miss. and Western Tennessee.
    -At least one freeway overpass in Ft. Worth was closed due to accumulation of ice.

    We are getting report of earthquake felt in Texas midnight!
    Laura from Bedford, Texas: "Not sure what time it was, Earthquake, sounded like clap of thunder and the whole bed and window frame moved, felt like the window was going to crack above bed, threw items on top of the refridgerator on the floor. Thought I dreamed this, until I logged on to net tonite. Scary."
  • M 5.0 moderate earthquake in Guerrero, Mexico (@ 23 km depth) with epicenter located 7 km NW of San Juan Cacahuatepec. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Ometepec, Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Santa Maria Asuncion Tlaxiaco and Cacahuatepec. People of Acatzingo, Chilapa, Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City, Miguel Hidalgo and Naucalpan will have felt weak shaking of MMI III.

  • M 6.1 strong shallow but harmless sea quake in Pacific-Antarctic ridge (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 2566 km SE Dunedin.

  • M 3.5 light shallow earthquake in Central California (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located just 7 km ENE from Pinnacles. Weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Monterey, Seaside, Santa Cruz, Salinas, Soledad, Greenfield,King City and San Jose City Hall.

  • M 4.7 moderate earthquake in Myanmar (@ 115 km depth) with epicenter located 41 km E of Mawlaik. Weak shaking of MMI III will have felt by the people of Kakching, Thoubal and Churachandpur (India).
    11:17 UTC (local time Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 05:47 PM @ epicenter)
  • M 2.8 weak shallow earthquake in Bulgaria (@ 2 km depth) with epicenter located 5 km W Batanovci. It will have well felt by the people of  Radomir, Pernik and Sofia.
    10:34 UTC (local time 12:34; 2013/01/15 @ epicenter)
  • M 4.4 moderate earthquake in Northern Xinjiang, China (@ 28 km depth) with epicenter located 56 km SSW of Yining Xian. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Zhaosu, Zharkent, Tyup and Karakol (Kyrgyzstan).

Recent Flash Floods
Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Afghanistan (Amu Darya), Australia (Darling), Bolivia (Madre de Dios), Brazil (Tocantins), Chad (N Djamena), China (Mekong and Huang He), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ubangi), Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq (Shatt al Arab and Tigris), Kenya (Tana), Philippines, Sudan (Blue Nile, White Nile), Syria (Euphrates), Tanzania.
  • Flooding in East Jakarta, Indonesia
    -Train services between Bogor and Jatinegara, East Jakarta was closed due to floods.
    -Floodwaters also inundated the Kampung Badan station on the border between North Jakarta and Central Jakarta.
  • Flash floods in Nelson, New Zealand
    -Flash floods in Nelson,  Southland, New Zealand washed away two vans of tourists. However tourists escaped the flood.
    -Nelson received about 100mm of rain. Maitai valley road at Sharlands Creek was closed because of flood waters.
    -Heavy rain in Christchurch also caused surface flooding around the Avon River in New Brighton.

Erupting Volcanoes: Fuego, Santiago, Poas, Reventador, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Raung, Erta Ale, Paluweh, Gamalama, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Manam, Ulawun, Tolbachik and Kilauea volcano.
  • Powerful eruption and sustained lava flows reported from an active volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli.

  • Tropical Cyclone Narelle
    -As of 12:00 UTC, TC Narelle was located  195 nm west-southwest of Perth, Australia.
  • Tropical Cyclone Emang
    -As of 12:00 UTC, TC Emang was located 525 nm southeast of Diego Garcia.


Natural Disaster News
  • Tornado in Blackall, Australia
    -A tornado touched down in Blackall, State of Queensland, Australia.
    -Storm also damaged 15 houses in Jundah.
  • Heavy snow fall in Netherlands
    -Heavy snow in Netherlands caused traffic jam of more than 1,000 kilometers.
    -It is regarded as the longest ever traffic jams in Netherlands because of snow.
    -Several flights were canceled at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport of Netherland.
  • The 14th National Earthquake Safety Day was celebrated in different parts of Nepal today. Magnitude 8.1 earthquake in Nepal in 1934, January 15 (Magh 2, 1990 B.S.) killed 10,700 people.
  • Beichuan, a county in Sichuan province of China has launched a quake warning system today. Beichuan earthquake warning system works via television network. During minor earthquake,  a scrolling text will be shown on TV whereas during a major earthquake, an information window will pop out on TV, giving people a maximum of 31 seconds to escape.
