Recent Natural Disasters

• Snowstorms in Huailai, China
  -Three Japanese tourists killed in heavy snowstorms during a visit to the Great Wall of China.
  -Total six (Japanese-2, Chinese -2) were climbing a mountain from the Beijing side to tour a section of the Great Wall.
  -Thirty-eight flights were cancelled at the Beijing Capital International Airport and other 14 flights were delayed.
  -Snow also blocked the Beijing-Tibet Highway.
  -Beijing issued orange alert and a regional red alert (Red first and Orange second-highest blizzard alert) following the worse weather.
  -Severe weather also affected Beijing, Hebei and the Inner Mongolia region.
  -The 2008 Chinese winter storms, China's worst winter weather in half a century, killed at least 129 people. Winter storm was mainly related to abnormal atmospheric circulation and La Niña.

• M 4.6 moderate shallow earthquake in Taiwan (@ 14 km depth) with epicenter located 25 km SSW of Hualian. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Buli, Lugu, Zhongxing New Village and Taipei.

• M 4.5 moderate earthquake in Western Xizang (@ 66 km depth) with epicenter located 36 km NE of Chongdui (China). It will have well felt by the people of Banepa, Panaoti and Kathmandu (Nepal). Click for detail report on this Nepal/Tibet quake.

  Update
  Nepal Seismological center mentions magnitude 5.7 earthquake with epicenter in Tibet about 136 km north east of Kathmandu, Nepal. The data is totally different than USGS and EMSC.
• M 4.7 moderate earthquake in Halmahera, Indonesia (@ 46 km depth) with epicenter located 126 km NE of Tobelo. It will have faintly felt by the people of Ternate and Kota Ternate.

• M 5.7 strong sea quake Off the East Coast of Honshu, Japan (@ 16 km depth) with epicenter located 217 km ESE of Ishinomaki. Weak shaking of MMI II will have felt by the people of Ofunato, Kamaishi, Tsukuba, Chiba and Tokyo.

• M 2.0 minor rare earthquake in New Jersey centered in Ringwood. New Jeresy (N.J.) earthquake was felt in Mahwah, Wanaque, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, West Milford and Paterson. Last earthquake in New Jersey was of 2.2 magnitude in February 2010.

Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Afghanistan (Amu Darya), Argentina, Australia (Murray and Darling), Brazil (Tocantins and Ana Doce Ponte Nova), Chad (N Djamena), China (Mekong, Xi Jiang and Huang He), Colombia (Japura), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Lualaba), Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iraq (Tigris), Japan, Malaysia, Nigeria (Niger and Benue), Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Philippines, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan (White Nile and Blue Nile), Tajikistan, United States (Mississippi) and Venezuela (Orinoco).

Erupting Volcanoes: Propocatepetl, Fuego, Reventador, Villarrica, Stromboli, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Erta Ale, Marapi, Semeru, Paluweh, Gamalama, Lokon-Empung, Sakurajima, Ulawun, Yasur, Ambrym, Kizimen, Shiveluch and Kilauea volcano.

There is no tropical storm activity.

• Tornado in La Marque, Texas
  -A tornado (Twister) caused damage across La Marque. It also caused damage to the fire station. However no injury reported.
• Winter storms in states of New York and New Jersey
  -A winter storm off the U.S. East Coast is forecast to hit hurricane Sandy affected areas of New York and New Jersey by Thursday. Hurricane-force winds of 55 miles per hour is expected to be off the coast of North Carolina by Wednesday morning before reaching the area.
  -Coastal flooding is predicted along the Atlantic coast of New Jersey and Delaware.
