Recent Natural Disasters

• Magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Canada and Tsunami wave in Hawaii
  -Magnitude 7.7 massive earthquake hit Queen Charlotte Islands Region with epicenter located 139 km S of Masset, Canada.
  -A Tsunami Warning was issued immediately for coastal British Columbia and parts of Alaska. Later on Tsunami wave also traveled Hawaii. This earthquake is the 3rd strongest in Canada since 1900, strongest was 8.1 in 1949.
  -About 120,000 people were evacuated from the Coastal areas of Hawaii.

• M 3.9 light shallow earthquake in Southern California (@ 18 km depth) with epicenter located 10 km SE from Valle Vista. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of  Idyllwild, Hemet, Palm Springs, Fallbrook, Escondido, Santee, Indio, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Riverside, Hemet, Murrieta, Perris, Menifee, Winchester and Chino Hills.

• M 4.7 moderate earthquake in Philippines Island region (@ 35 km depth) with epicenter located 127 km SE from Guiuan. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Surigao and Butuan.

• Typhoon Son-tinh
  -As of 15:00 UTC, Typhoon Son-tinh was located 70 nm southeast of hanoi, Vietnam.

• Earthquake warning in Iceland
  -Icelandic authorities warned the people in north of the island to prepare for a possible major earthquake.
  -The earthquake warning was issued because of several minor quakes in an area under the sea about 20 km off the north of Iceland.
• Earthquake scientists sentenced to jail
  -Six scientists have been sentenced to jail for inadequate risk assessment and sending scientifically incorrect messages to the public before the L'Aquila earthquake. 2009 L'Aquila earthquake killed 309 people.
