M 5.3 strong earthquake shakes Central California today the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 27 km ENE from King City and 73 km SE Salinas. The temblor occurred at a shallow depth of 5.8 miles.
Following USGS PAGER MAP, moderate shaking of MMI V was felt by the people of King City and Greenfield. People of Soledad, Coalinga, Gonzales and Lake Nacimiento felt light shaking of MMI IV. Similarly weak shaking of MMI III was felt by the people of Salinas, Madera, Fresno, Santa Cruz and Clovis.
Fresno is the fifth largest city in California. The USGS database shows (prediction) that there is a 58.399% chance of a major earthquake within 50 miles of Fresno, California within the next 50 years.
The largest recorded earthquake in California was the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake of magnitude 8.0. That earthquake ruptured the San Andreas Fault from Parkfield to Wrightwood. Note that the town of Parkfield is in central California which produces an earthquake of about magnitude 6 + every 20–30 years.
Earthquake in Central California today also struck along the San Andreas Fault and was followed by at least four aftershocks that were greater than magnitude 2.5.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from today's Central California earthquake.
