Classes suspended, tourists evacuated after M 6.2 quake in La Paz, Mexico

More than 1,000 tourists were evacuated from  their hotels in the resort town of Los Cabos. However no damage or injury reported.

Following Ivan Calderon, a Baja California Sur state civil protection official, classes in all the state of South Baja California has been suspended to check the possible damages.

M 6.2 very strong earthquake shakes Gulf of California off Mexico's Baja Peninsula, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 76 km (47 miles) NNE of La Paz. It was 6.3 miles deep.

Following USGS PAGER MAP, Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of La Paz, Topolobampo, Higuera de Zaragoza, Ahome, Bagojo, Ciudad Constitucion, Los Mochis, Guasave and Guamuchil. Weak shaking of MMI III will have felt by the people of Culiacan and Ciudad Obregon.

 In September 1985, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake killed more than 9,500 people in Mexico City. Mexico sits on top of three of the large tectonic plates and is one of the “most seismologically active regions” in the world.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
