A series of earthquakes has rattled rural areas of Imperial and San Diego counties near the California-Mexico border today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The first quake struck at 10:02 a.m. Sunday about three miles north-northwest of Brawley. Strong quake of magnitude 5.3 struck at 12:31 p.m. It was 5.8 miles deep.
Following USGS PAGER MAP, strong shaking of MMI VI will have felt by the people of Westmorland and Brawley. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Calipatria, Imperial, El Centro, Seeley and Mexicali. People of Yuma, San Luis Rio Colorado, Indio and Tecate will have felt a weak shaking of MMI III.
In first hours or so after the first earthquakes, at least hundreds more quakes struck the same approximate epicenter about 16 miles north of El Centro.
The last major swarm was in 2005, following a magnitude-5.1 quake.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
