Recent Natural Disasters

• Deadly flooding and landslides in Bangladesh

  

  Army personnel clear debris in search for survivors and bodies
  in Chittagong, June 27, 2012; Source Reuters

  -At least 100 people killed in massive landslide and floods in three southeastern districts of Chittagong, Cox's Bazaar and Bandarban of Bangladesh.
  -More than 250,000 people reported to be affected by the floods.
  -The army has been deployed to help with search and rescue efforts in the affected hill region of Chittagong.
  -All flights in and out of Chittagong's Shah Amanat International Airport have been suspended since Tuesday afternoon.
  -Train service between Chittagong and other parts also closed. A railway bridge reported to be collapsed due to a rain-triggered flash flood.

• Tornadoes in Polk, Florida
  -Seven tornadoes confirmed by the National Weather Service in Polk county as a result of Tropical Storm Debby.
  -At least 87 homes and buildings reported to be damaged in Polk.
  -Follwoing Polk County Fire/Rescue, preliminary Polk tornado damage is estimated around $5 million.
  -Eleven people were killed, including three in the city of Tampa and seven in Polk County in a deadly tornado in 1996.

• M 5.2 moderate shallow earthquake in Flores Region, Indonesia (@ 9 km depth) with epicenter located 23 km N of Cempa. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Labuhanbajo, Ruteng and Bima.

• M 3.2 weak shallow earthquake in Bosnia and Herzegovina (@ 2 km depth) with epicenter located just 6 km E Stolac. It will have well felt by the people of Metkovic and Mostar.

• M 5.7 strong deep earthquake in El Salvador (@ 161 km depth) with epicenter located just 4 km WNW of Tacuba. Light to weak shaking will have well felt by the people of Ahuachapan, Moyuta, Concepcion de Ataco, Tacuba, Conguaco, San Francisco Menendez, San Salvador, Villa Nueva, Guatemala City, Mixco and San Pedro Sula. • M 3.2 weak shallow earthquake in Sicily, Italy with epicenter located just 5 km SW Canicattini bagni. It will have well felt by the people of  Avola and Syracuse.

• M 4.5 moderate earthquake in western Iran (@ 38 km depth) with epicenter just below pamas. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Nahavand, Aleshtar, Borujerd, Malayer and Qom.

Flooding List

• Landslide and flooding in Guwahati, India
  -One killed and three other injured in a landslide in Santipur hillside of Guwahati, India.
  -Landslide and floods have affected Kahilipara and Dhirenpara area of Guhawati. Ambari, Anil Nagar and Nabin Nagar worst affected by flood water.
  -The wall of a temple damaged in a landslide in Narengi.
  -Following regional meteorological centre, heavy to very heavy rain forecast to hit several places in Assam, including Guwahati, during the next 18 hours.
  -Three people were killed in a landslide in Lalungaon area under Gorchuk Police Station in Guwahati on June 22.
  
• Flooding in Wisconsin, United States
  -A state of flood emergency declared for three northwestern Wisconsin counties (Douglas, Ashland and Bayfield )
  -Damage estimated more than $2.5 million.

• Tropical depression Debby
  -As of 01:00 UTC, Debby was located 40 km N of Cedar Key Florida.
  -The center of Debby is expected to cross the northern Florida Peninsula during the next 24 hours.

• Tropical Storm Doksuri
  -As of 01:00 UTC, Tropical storm 07w (doksuri) was located approximately 360 nm east of Manila, Philippines.

• Wildfire in Pendleton, Oregon
  -Pendleton wildfire has burned more than 200 acres and 15 percent of it is contained. It is three miles northwest of Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton.
  -Smoke can be easily seen even from Temecula valley.
• Tornadoes in Saskatchewan, Canada
  -Tornado watches issued by Environment Canada for Saskatoon, Prince Albert and numerous other communities in Saskatchewan.
• Thunderstorms and lightning in Borlange, Sweden
  -Seventeen people reported to be injured in lightning at Sweden's Peace and Love Music Festival.
