Several buildings evacuated in Medan.

M 5.9 very strong earthquake rocks Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 79 km W Kabanjahe. It was 6.5 miles deep. No Tsunami warning issued.

Tremors were widely felt in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia including Pulau Pinang, Perak, Sumatera Utara, Pulau Pinang, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

According to USGS Pager Map, felt intensity are:
MMI IV (light shaking): Kabanjahe, Perbaungan, Binjai, Sunggal, Delitua, Stabat, Medan, Percut, Pematangsiantar and Perbaungan.
MMI III (weak shaking): Kisaran and Tanjungbalai.

The 2012 Indian Ocean earthquake that struck near the Indonesian province of Aceh on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 was the 11th strongest earthquake since 1900, an unusually strong intraplate earthquake, and the largest strike-slip earthquake ever recorded

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
