Another M 5.0 moderate earthquake recorded closer to Iwaki. The epicenter of latest quake is 31 km ESE of Iwaki, Honshu, Japan. It was felt as far as Tokyo city.

USGS has downgraded the magnitude to 5.7. With this magnitude about 259,000 people will have felt strong shaking of MMI VI.

Strong shaking of MMI VI will have felt by the people of Iwaki, Namie and Kitaibaraki.
People of Takahagi, Sukagawa, Funaishikawa, Mito and Fukushima will have felt moderate shaking.

M 6.0 strong shallow earthquake rocks Honshu, Japan at 07:10 pm local time. According to preliminary report by USGS, earthquake's epicenter was located 38 km (24 miles) E (101°) from Iwaki.

Japan and the surrounding islands straddle four major tectonic plates: Pacific plate; North America plate; Eurasia plate; and Philippine Sea plate.

Since 1900, three great earthquakes occurred off Japan and three north of Hokkaido. They are the M8.4 1933 Sanriku-oki earthquake, the M8.3 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake, the M9.0 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the M8.4 1958 Etorofu earthquake, the M8.5 1963 Kuril earthquake, and the M8.3 1994 Shikotan earthquake.
