Recent World Disasters

• M 6.9 very strong Sea quake Off the East Coast of Honshu, Japan (@ 27 km depth) with epicenter located 235 km S of Kushiro. About 611,000 people will have felt moderate shaking of MMI V. People of Obihiro, Otofuke, Shizunai and Kushiro will have experienced moderate shaking of MMI V. This earthquake generated a small tsunami. Some communities along the northern Pacific coast advised residents to evacuate coastal homes. The meteorological agency also warned the tsunami could reach the Kuril islands, off Hokkaido, which Russia has controlled since Japan's surrender at the end of World War II

  JMA cancelled the Tsunami warning for eastern part of pacific coast of Hokkaido (Sanriku Oki) at 19:40 JST

  M 5.7 another very strong shallow earthquake in Japan (@ 17 km depth) with epicenter just 90 km E of Tokyo. This earthquake (strongest of all) occurred 3 hours after the earlier M 6.9. About 297,000 people will have experienced very strong shaking of MMI VII.
  People of Asahi, Hasaki and Omigawa will have felt very strong shaking of MMI VII. Strong shaking will have felt by the people of Yokaichiba, Itako and Yachimata. Moderate in Chiba and Mito and light shaking wll have experienced in Tokyo, Urawa and Utsunomiya city of Japan.

  Narita International Airport was briefly closed to inspect the runways. Several local train services were also suspended for safety checks.
  Tsunami Advisories have been issued for pacific coast of Aomori pref. Tsunami height is expected to be about 0.5 meters

  Another M 6.1 very strong Sea quake Off the East Coast of Honshu, Japan (@ 10 km depth) one and half hour after the earlier. The epicenter of this quake was 244 km S of Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan

• M 6.2 strong earthquake in New Britain Region, Papua New Guinea (@ 48 km depth) with epicenter located 96 km E of Kimbe. About 36,000 people will have experienced moderate shaking of MMI V. Light shaking will have experienced in Kimbe and Kandrian city. People of Kokopo, Rabaul and Namatanai will have felt just a weak shaking. Earthquake with strong intensities are common in these regions.

• M 3.4 weak very shallow earthquake in North Sea (@ 1 km depth) with epicenter located 177 km W Stavanger-sandnes. Weak shaking will have felt as far as Haugesund, Norway

• M 3.4 weak very shallow earthquake in Azerbaijan (@ 2 km depth) with epicenter located 16 km S Samaxi. Weak shaking will have felt as far as Sumqayit

• M 4.0 deep earthquake in Veracruz, Mexico (@ 119 km depth) with epicenter located just 8 km SW San juan evangelista. The popualted area Minatitlán is 72 km far from epicenter where it will have felt faintly

• M 4.8 moderate earthquake in Volcano Islands, Japan Region (@ 40 km depth) with epicenter located 131 km ENE of Iwo Jima. It will have faintly felt

Recent Volcanic Activity

• Greece/Kolumbo submarine recent volcanic activity
  -According to Andrew Newman, a US researcher, the Greek island of Santorini is showing increasing signs of volcanic activity
  -The volcano's magma chamber is filling and the chamber has expanded by nearly 500 million cubic feet since last January

Recent Flood Update

• Flooding In Arica And Punta Arenas, Chile (Daily update)
  -One fatality reported so far. Felipe Álvarez Gutiérrez, 21 years old,  fell into the flooded river on Monday and has been pronounced dead
  -More than 30 homes damaged and about 67 people are living in municipal shelters
  -Minister of Social Development, Joaquin Lavin, the deputy minister of Agriculture, Alvaro Cruzat and Governor of Arica, Ximena Valcarce, traveled from the mouth of the Rio San Jose to the Valley of Azapa to inspect the damage caused by the flood

• Flooding in South Louisiana, USA
  -State of emergency declared in flooded zone of South Louisiana (Lafayette, Acadia, St. Landry and St. Martin)
  -Wildlife crews rescued 77 people from flooded areas in Carencro
  -16 middle school students were safely removed from a bus stranded in the water
  -No deaths or injuries reported so far
  

Recent Cyclones

• Tropical Cyclone Lua
  -Tropical cyclone lua, located approximately 350 nm north-northwest of Learmonth, Australia, has tracked northwestward at 10 knots over the past six hours
  -By March 16, lua is forecast to strike Port Hedland as a tropical cyclone (Cat 1)

Other Disasters

• Forest fire in Maple Creek region of Canada burned area to the north of the Trans-Canada Highway and led to the evacuation of at least two farmyards. The fire is under control and no injury was reported so far
