Recent World Disasters

  • Flooding in Australia (Daily update)
    -Two more bodies found today in floodwaters in the western NSW town of Bourke
    -One thousand people have been told to leave their homes ahead of an expected flood peak tomorrow in NSW
    -The water is decreasing slowly in Nathalia
    -Boats and sightseers are being urged to stay away to avoid putting extra pressure on the flood barriers
    Update
    -Moderate flood levels continue in the Paroo, Georgina and Diamantina catchments and minor flood levels will continue along the Bulloo River at Thargomindah for most of the coming week. Minor flood levels are occurring at Stonehenge along the Thomson River.
    -Flood warning is issued for Georgina, Diamantina, Paroo and Bulloo Catchments
  • Tornado in Island of Oahu, Hawaii
    -Several houses damaged in Lanikai
    -The tornado lasted about 10-15 minutes
    -No one injured or killed

  • M 5.6 strong harmless sea quake in Alaska Peninsula (@ 18 km depth) with epicenter located 131 km ENE of Chernabura Island and 146 km SSE of Chignik. The magnitude is such that a tsunami IS NOT EXPECTED
    14:10 UTC (local time Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 05:10 AM @ epicenter)
  • M 4.9 moderate shallow earthquake in Cuba region (@ 18 km depth) with epicenter located 113 km SSW of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. Weak shaking will have felt even in sections of Kingston, St. Andrew, Portmore and Spanish Town.
    On September 15, 2011 an earthquake with M 6.0 was recorded in same region with epicenter 108 km southwest of the Cuban town of Campechuela  and 110 km from the northern coast of Jamaica

  • M 5.3 moderate deep earthquake in Tarapaca, Chile (Banos de Chusmisa, Region de Tarapaca @ 102 km depth) with epicenter located 123 km ENE of Iquique. Weak shaking will have felt as far as Tacna, Peru
    Puchuldiza volcano lies just 21 km far from epicenter

  • M 4.5 moderate earthquake in Eastern Honshu, Japan (Ganyu, Miyagi-ken @ 35 km depth) with epicenter located 35 km W Ichinoseki. Weak shaking will have felt as far as Sendai.
    Kurikoma volcano lies just 6 km far from epicenter. Yesterday M 5.4 moderate earthquake in east coast of Honshu, Japan was felt as far as Tokyo

Recent Volcanic Activity
  • Alaska/Iliamna recent volcanic activity
    -AVO has raised the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and Alert Level to ADVISORY at Iliamna Volcano following a sustained increase in seismic activity over the past three months
    -It remains possible for intermittent, sudden explosions of ash to occur at any time. Ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level may develop
    -A similar seismic swarm was detected in 1996/1997 that was likely related to an intrusion of magma at depth did not culminate in an eruption
    -Iliamna Volcano is located on the west side of lower Cook Inlet in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, about 130 miles southwest of Anchorage and 60 miles northwest of Homer
    -From some days, Cleveland, another Alaska volcano seems to have increase in seismic tremor

Recent Flood Update
  • Flash flood in Tutong district
    -Kampong Panchong, Kuala Ungar, Binutan and Rambai area affected by flood


Recent Cyclones
  • Tropical cyclone Irina
    -Tropical cyclone Irina, located approximately 290 nm southeast of Maputo, Mozambique, has tracked westward at 05 knots over the past six hours. It has already weaken to a tropical depression
  • Tropical cyclone Koji
    -Tropical cyclone Koji, located approximately 925 nm southeast of Diego Garcia, has tracked west-southwestward at 10 knots over the past six hours
    -Koji is forecast to continue tracking generally west-southwestward along the northwestern periphery of a steering ridge over the next 24 hours and should reach a peak intensity of 75 knots

Other Disasters
  • Avalanche near to Sparwood, Canada killed one and injured four. This fatality is the second avalanche-related death in British Columbia’s backcountry this week
  • RED ALERT declared for forest fire in district of Christmas, Chile. Fire has burned 35 hectares of plantation pine, eucalyptus in the area.
