Across Thailand, the earthquake caused at least 10 deaths and 68 injuries. The impact was widespread and resulted in significant casualties and damage. On March 28, 2025, at 12:50:54 MMT (06:20:54 UTC), Myanmar experienced its most powerful earthquake in over a century. With a magnitude of 7.7 as per the US Geological Survey (USGS)—or 8.2 according to the Thai Meteorological Department—the seismic event struck Sagaing Region near Mandalay, unleashing widespread destruction and leaving over 1,000 dead and thousands injured across Myanmar and neighboring Thailand.
In Bangkok, an under-construction 30-storey building collapsed in the Chatuchak district, leading to seven worker deaths and nine injuries. Additionally, 85 individuals remained unaccounted for as of the following morning. A construction worker also lost their life in Bang Pho due to a crane collapse at a condominium site. Another crane fell on the Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway in Din Daeng, causing road closures. Tragically, a critically ill infant passed away during the evacuation from Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health. In Nonthaburi province, one death was speculated to have been caused by fright.
The earthquake caused severe panic, especially in Bangkok, where residents experienced building sways and reported over 2,000 structural cracks to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Public services faced disruptions, with rapid transit lines suspended for a day and road traffic grinding to a standstill. The damage extended to northern provinces and major cities, including Chiang Mai and Lampang, where cracks and structural issues were observed in buildings and hospitals.
