Severe Flooding and Landslides Cause Devastation in Northern Vietnam

June 10, 2024: Northern Vietnam is grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding and landslides, which have resulted in the loss of three lives. Heavy rainfall in the region has led to thousands of homes being partially submerged and significantly damaging local infrastructure.

The impact of the severe weather has extended beyond Ha Giang, with reports of serious flooding in the northern port city of Hai Phong and Quang Ninh province, the location of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Ha Long Bay.

The provincial authorities have reported that the incessant rain has caused severe damage, cutting off access to three communes neighboring China due to landslides. Additionally, the high-water levels in the Lo River have triggered devastating floods and landslides, exacerbating the already dire situation.

The relentless rain has heavily affected the northern province of Ha Giang, known for its picturesque landscapes and popular motorcycle tours. Distressed residents in Ha Giang City have found themselves standing on rooftops, awaiting rescue from the deluge.
