Flooding and Landslides Claim Eight Lives in Ivory Coast's Abidjan

June 15, 2024: Heavy rainfall in Abidjan, Ivory Coast's largest city, has led to flooding and landslides, resulting in the tragic loss of eight lives.

The heavy rainfall, which began on Thursday afternoon, made roads impassable in various parts of the city, affecting its six million residents. At least 18 individuals were evacuated to hospitals amid the crisis.

The torrential rain from Thursday afternoon to Saturday morning was approximately four times more intense than the city's normal rainfall. The national meteorological service, Sodexam, disclosed that 214 millimeters (8.4 inches) of rainfall, a quarter of the expected precipitation for the May-June-July rainy season, poured down within 24 hours.
