January 25, 2020: At least 19 people have been killed and more than 600 have been injured in eastern Turkey after an earthquake rattled Elazig on Friday evening at 08:55 pm.
The 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Sivrice, in eastern Elazig province of Turkey.
The earthquake was felt in neighboring provinces of Elazığ, Diyarbakır, Malatya, Adıyaman and Samsun. Kandilli Observatory revised the size of the earthquake to 6.5.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), thirteen people were killed in Elazig province, four in Malatya, one in Diyarbakir and one in another area.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Elazig earthquake occurred as the result of strike-slip faulting on or near the plate boundary between the Arabia plate and the Anatolia Block of the Eurasia plate.
The earthquake is located on or close to the East Anatolian Fault. Turkey is a tectonically active country, and regularly experiences damaging earthquakes.
