Nepal: Storm in Bara and Parsa kills 29, injures 600

A preliminary report by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DoHM) has confirmed the first recorded tornado in Nepal which caused damages in Bara and Parsa districts.

April 1, 2019: Storm accompanied by hailstorms and rain has claimed lives of at least 29 people and injured more than 600 people.

According to the local authorities, 28 people died in Bara district and one in Parsa district of Nepal.

Most of the fatalities are from Pheta and Bhulahi Bharwaliya areas in Bara district.

Injured people are having treatment at Birgunj-based National Medical College and Narayani Sub-regional Hospital. Several people are also admitted at Kalaiya hospital.

The rainstorm on Sunday evening damaged hundreds of houses, electric poles and uprooted trees obstructing the roads.

The natural disaster also led to a power outage last night while the internet services have resumed in the affected districts, The Himalayan Times reported.

Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force of Nepal have been mobilised for the rescue and relief operation in the affected areas of Bara and Parsa district.

An emergency meeting of Province 2 Council of Ministers has decided to provide three lakhs to each victim’s family along with relief package including tents, food items, medical supplies, among others.
