Jammu & Kashmir earthquake triggers avalanche in Ladhak; 1 killed

An avalanche triggered by earthquake has claimed life of a military trooper and injured one other in frontier Kargil district of Ladakh division in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The avalanche was triggered by a mild earthquake which buried two troopers on surveillance duty Wednesday night, Xinhua News Agency reported quoting a military spokesman.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, magnitude 4.5 earthquake lashed Jammu & Kashmir at 10:17 pm on March 17, 2016.

Rescue teams of the army recovered the body on the third day of search operation.

Last month, at least 10 Indian troopers were buried under an avalanche on Siachen Glacier near Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
