2016 Monroe, Louisiana flooding kills 1; floods thousand homes

Flooding in Monroe, Louisiana has claimed life of a 7-year-old child and flooded more than 1,000 homes.

The Monroe Fire Department has received numerous calls from River Oaks. Several people have been evacuated from Parkview Apartments, Oregon Trail and the 300 Block of Nevada, The News Star reported. 

Over 23 inches of rain had fallen near Monroe, Louisiana, through Friday morning

Seven evacuation shelters have been opened.

  • West Monroe Recreation Center, 1802 N. Seventh St., West Monroe
  • Morehouse Parish, First Baptist Church at 620 East Madison Ave.
  • Lincoln Parish, Trinity United Methodist Church,  251-0750, 1000 Woodward Ave.

The Ouachita River has risen to 39.5 feet prompting a flood warning for Ouachita River at Monroe from Friday afternoon until further notice. 

The National Weather Service in Shreveport expects more flooding in Monroe in coming hours. Flash flood warnings have been issued for several parts of Louisiana until 12:15 pm CST Friday.

Severe weather has claimed lives of five people in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana.
