Fiji Meteorological Service has issued flood warning for all low lying areas along Rakiraki river including Rakiraki town.
In a special weather bulletin issued at 09:30 pm Thursday, Met Service said that a Category 1 Tropical Cyclone Winston was located about 730 km West-SouthWest of Rotuma and 650 km West-NorthWest of Nadi. The system is expected to bring heavy rainfall in the region.
A flood alert remains in effect in Wailotua station and areas adjacent to the downstream of Wainibuka river. Similarly, a heavy rain warning remains in force for Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Kadavu, Yasawa Islands and Mamanuca Islands.
Fiji named the Tropical Cyclone Winston after it formed today east of Vanuatu. Sustained winds at the centre of the low is expected to increase to 85km/h later today. It may upgrade to Category 2 cyclone in coming days but mayn't last too long as a cyclone.
Several roads flooded in Fiji
Several roads and bridges in the Western Division have been closed because of flooding triggered by heavy rain experienced over the past 24 hours.
Atleast 19 roads and bridges in Rakiraki, Tavua, Sigatoka and Ba are flooded, The Fiji Times Online reported quoting the National Emergency Operation Centre.
Most of the roads between Rakiraki and Nadi are also inundated and have been closed to all traffic.
