According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), at least nine sonic booms were recorded over the course of an hour and a half. Earthquake-like shaking was felt from southern New Jersey along the Eastern Seaboard to Long Island, New York.
The first tremor was recorded in the vicinity of Hammonton, about 37 miles south of Trenton. Supersonic tests were done around 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Thursday during which tremors were reported in the areas.
"An F-35C and F-18 from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, were conducting supersonic testing off the coast Thursday afternoon," 6ABC News reported quoting a Navy spokeswoman Connie Hempel said.
The sonic boom occurred 12 km SE of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
