-Flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has claimed lives of at least three people in Pemba in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique.

23:21 UTC (local time: 18:21; 2016-01-13 @ epicenter) - M 5.6 strong earthquake in China (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 120 km ENE of Kuqa. Weak shaking of MMI III will have been felt by the people of Kuqa and Korla.
21:28 UTC (local time: 03:18; 2016-01-14 @ epicenter) - M 5.0 moderate earthquake in Chile (@ 58 km depth) with epicenter located 91 km S of Arica. Weak shaking of MMI III will have been felt by the people of Iquique and Tacna (Peru).
12:20 UTC (local time: 09:20; 2016-01-13 @ epicenter) - M 5.8 strong earthquake in Tonga (@ 233 km depth) with epicenter located 149 km NW of Hihifo. Slight tremor will have been felt by the people of Mata-Utu, Apia, Tafuna and Pago Pago, American Samoa.
05:56 UTC (local time: 19:56; 2016-01-13 @ epicenter) - M 3.5 light earthquake in France (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 1 km S of Roulans. It will have been well felt by the people of Roulans and Besançon.
02:13 UTC (local time: 03:13; 2016-01-13 @ epicenter) - M 3.0 weak earthquake in Alaska (@ 15 km depth) with epicenter located 9 km NNE of Badger. Weak tremor will have been felt by the people of Fairbanks and College.

-Subtropical Storm Alex, in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, south-southwest of the Azores, is only the 2nd tropical storm to form in January since 1851.
-Alex formed from a system that first developed in the warm waters off the east coast of Florida last week and has tracked eastward across the ocean, gradually becoming stronger and more organized.
