Hurricane Alex made landfall on the island of Terceira in the central Azores Friday, the National Hurricane Center confirmed.
At 15:00 UTC, Hurricane Alex was located 55 km N of Terceira in the Azores with a maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.
Alex has weakened to a tropical storm and currently moving away from the Azores. Alex is expected to lose tropical characteristics later today.
The Azores Meteorological Service has discontinued the hurricane and tropical storm warning for the Azores.
Alex is the first Atlantic hurricane in January since Alice in 1955.
