Magnitude 7.5 massive earthquake hit Peshawar region of Pakistan today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 45 km N of `Alaqahdari-ye Kiran wa Munjan. It was 132.1 miles deep.
At least forty two people have died. Thirty people killed in Pakistan alone. Twelve more died in Afghanistan. Six people, including children, were killed in Swat, while four people were killed in the Bajaur tribal region after buildings collapsed in the area of Pakistan.
Forty minutes after the first earthquake, another 4.8 magnitude tremor was reported in the same area. Tremor was felt in parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.
According to USGS, earthquakes such as this event, with focal depths between 70 and 300 km, are commonly termed "intermediate-depth" earthquakes.
They typically cause less damage on the ground surface above their foci than is the case with similar magnitude shallow-focus earthquakes, but large intermediate-depth earthquakes may be felt at great distance from their epicenters.
