Probable '2022 Winter Olympics' city Almaty flooded after glacial melt

Glacial melt has triggered flooding in Almaty, Kazakhstan leading to evacuation of around 950 people, Officials said.

Glacial melt sent an unusually high amount of water mixed with boulders, KWTX-TV News reported quoting the Interior Ministry.

"At aroud 2.15 am morainic lake Bezymyannoye at Kargaly glacier outburst causing mud flows, with part of them overtopping the dam on the Kargaly River," Tengrinews.kz reported, citing Yury Ilyin, the city Vice Mayor.

At least 76 people sought medical help. No deaths have been reported.

In April too, sharp rise in temperature caused melting of snow and triggered flooding in Semey and Ayagoz districts in Kazakhstan.

Almaty has bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics along with Beijing, China. The host city will be elected on 31 July 2015, at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
