Met Office denies rumors of earthquake, tsunami to strike Pahang, Malaysia

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has denied rumors of earthquake and tsunami to strike Pahang in the next 36 hours.

"As such, the people are advised not to easily believe any advice or warning circulated on the social media that does not come from MetMalaysia," Malaysia national daily, Bernama has quoted the MET statement.

Bernama tweeted, "Meteorological Department denies rumors of impending earthquake in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang and Kuala Lumpur."

 

The people can verify any information with the department at http://met.gov.my; official mobile web m.met.gov.my or via the Facebook and Twitter pages, the department said.

They could also contact the MetMalaysia hotline at 1300 22 1MET (1638), it added.

The rumors have been continuously circulating on the social media after magnitude 5.9 earthquake rattled Sabah, Malaysia on June 5, 2015 at 07:15 am local time.

The Sabah earthquake 2015 has been considered as the strongest quake to affect Malaysia since 1976. The earthquake has claimed lives of at least 18 people.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Meteorological Department is holding a Tsunami Siren test today ( Wednesday) in Bintulu , Sarawak area around 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The public is advised not to panic during the Tsunami Siren test and any questions regarding this test can call 03-79678066.

Malaysian Meteorological Department has recorded weak aftershock of magnitude 3.2 in Sabah region today at 06:50 pm with epicenter located 25 km northeast Ranau. Yesterday, magnitude 3.2 weak aftershock was recorded in Sabah at 01:40 pm with epicenter located  25 km northwest Ranau.
