Swiss Alps avalanche claims 4 lives

An avalanche in the Swiss Alps has claimed lives of four people and injured three others. The victims were part of a group of nine skiers that was swept away by the avalanche on the eastern slope of Piz Vilan in the eastern Swiss district of Landquart, The Local has written quoting the cantonal police.

Three of skiers were killed on the mountain. According to the Police, four seriously injured skiers were recovered and transported by helicopter to hospitals in Saint Gallen, Zurich and Chur but one of them died on Saturday evening.

One skier was able to dig himself out of the snow, while another member of the party escaped the avalanche. The skiers were all equipped with avalanche rescue equipment.

Officials had issued avalanche warning in many parts of the Swiss Alps and the Jura Mountains following the recent snowstorms.
