Avalanche in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province kills 12

An avalanche in Afghanistan's Badakhshan Province  has claimed lives of at least twelve people.

The disaster occurred in Raghistan district last night which also injured two others, Bakhtar News Agency has written quoting Ahmad Jaweed Jaweed, member of provincial council and people representative in Raghistan district.

Heavy snowfall has also destroyed ten houses in Raghistan district.

The emergency assistance to some of the areas hit by heavy snow have been delivered, Jaweed added.

Deadly avalanches are common in winter season in mountainous region of Afghanistan. At least three avalanches hit the Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan in March 2012 claiming hundreds lives. An avalanche in Bamiyan, Afghanistan claimed lives of five people in March 2014.
