Flash floods, landslides in Sri Lanka kill 39

Flash floods and landslides in Sri Lanka have claimed lives of at least 39 people and displaced more than 1 million in the past two weeks, Reuters has reported quoting data from the island's Disaster Management Center.

Thousands of hectares of crops, mainly the food staple rice, have been destroyed in the agricultural heartland of the North Central and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa had instructed officials to reconstruct the houses destroyed by landslides and flooding in Sri Lanka with the assistance of Army personnel.

Severe flooding in Southeast Asia have affected Sri Lanka, southern Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia in recent days. The worst flooding in Malaysia in more than a decade has claimed lives of at least 10 people. Malaysia has been even experiencing the biggest number of flood evacuees in the nation's history
