Snowstorms in Japan have claimed life of a truck driver. The truck driver died in a pileup on a snowy road in Otake, Hiroshima Prefecture, The Japan Times reported.
According to the East Japan Railway Co., four bullet train services on its Akita Shinkansen Line were halted due to strong wind. In Hokkaido, 4,824 houses suffered blackouts in 20 municipalities including Nemuro, where a maximum wind speed of around 144 kph was recorded on Wednesday.
Strong winds and heavy snow in Japan have forced the cancellation of almost 300 flights, Japan Today reported. All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines have cancelled at least 296 international and domestic flights due to snowstorm.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, more than 70 centimeters of snow had fallen on parts of Hokkaido in the 24 hours to 12 noon.
The Meteorological Agency expects the storm to continue through Thursday, especially in Hokkaido and other parts of northern Japan. It warned of blizzards, tidal waves and avalanches.
