By 2015, on average over 375 million people per year are likely to be affected by natural disasters. This is over 50% more than have been affected in an average year during the last decade, a 2009 Oxfam report had mentioned forecasting the natural disasters 2015 statistics.
The report had also claimed that we need $42 billion more now each year in humanitarian aid to help meet people’s basic needs and another $50 billion now each year to help developing countries adapt to the effects of climate change
As shown in the graph below, the article claims with 95% confident that the number of people affected by climate-related natural disaster in 2015 will be between 336 million and 413 million in an average year.
The insured losses from natural catastrophes and man-made disasters in 2014 totalled USD 34 billion, the preliminary estimation by Swiss Re’s sigma research unit has shown. Around 11,000 people have lost their lives in natural catastrophe and man-made disaster events in 2014. Earthquake, flood and landslide were among the worst natural disasters to hit the world in 2014.
